Please read this book! I loved it!! It is a coming of age memoir of a surfer/Buddhist or should I say Buddhist surfer! Anyway, two of the big passions of my life have been Buddhism and surfing and how they intersect. This book truly understands the joy of both paths and their obstacles. I read it in one sitting, grinning like I was trimming my longboard on a perfect wave in some tropical paradise. It is funny, insightful, compassionate and full of wisdom and adventure. I had a delightful lunch at the Shangri-La Hotel in Santa Monica today with my old model buddy John Pearson. The Shangri-La just went through a 31 million dollar renovation and looks magnificent. The food was amazing. Salad Nicoise for me and a Lobster Cobb salad for John. We both used to stay there back in the 80’s and 90’s when it was the place to stay for many of the acting and modeling crowd. Besides being an amazing model who has consistently worked with the best over the 25 years, John is a true gentleman with a quick wit and huge heart. We talked about Love, death, women, children, soccer, metaphysics, photographers, agents and God knows what else. To say the least the lunch was memorable. Nothing like good food with a great friend, sitting pool side and just enjoying a free flowing conversation about Life. I met John 25 years ago on a shoot in the Hamptons and he has kept his positive, loving self intact. He just moved to LA with his wife and kids and I am glad that he will be near by! We are all interconnected in so many ways. We were all helpless babies at one time and only survived because of the love of our parents. Yet often we are consumed with our differences, prejudices and fears. When I read the news it seem the world is burning up in so many fires of war, crime, cruelty and hardship. Yet, there are all kinds of acts of courage,love and kindness that are occurring simultaneously. Sometimes in the most desperate of circumstances. Some days we are consumed by our own fears and sorrows. I know that I am sometimes. Yet we always have a choice to respond to others with love and kindness in the spirit of service. It is these little acts of kindness that are given and received that make life fun and warm and meaningful. So many moments that happen every day where we could exchange a warm thank-you or hello. Nothing big! Just simple and from the heart. Maybe you are having a crappy day and your car wont start or you just had a fight with your wife or partner. you are wrapped up in your mind ,replaying the situation over and over. Well let go!!! Love. Look at the beautiful sky. Say an inner prayer of gratitude thanking your Higher Power for all your amazing blessings. Recently i have been practicing sending out a blessing of loving/kindness to random strangers. “May your heart be filled with Loving-kindness.” I repeat it several times as i try to project a feeling of loving -kindness towards them. Better than sending out judgments. Think if everyone walked around doing that to everyone they met. Wow! and guess what, you start to feel some of that love inside yourself. Anyway, everyone drive safe and be safe this last weekend of the summer. try to get outside and enjoy our beautiful earth. send some loving kindness to everyone you meet. Peace and Love, Bruce

I am in Dallas, Texas for a funeral of my wifes Aunt Connie. She was a very sweet and kind woman who had a great love of life and a sense of style. She will be missed but as she suffered greatly with Lou Gerhrigs disease, she is in a much better place. A great memorial with some amazing prayers where you could really feel the love in the room. Whats Death have to do with fashion. I guess nothing and everything. So many friends and colleagues have died over the years that I often flash on the Oscars when they run the clip on all the people in the acting industry ,who have passed on in the last year. Very Dreamlike! So many of the faces we know so well. Anyway, for the rest of us still here lets spread love and kindness to all we meet. I dont quite understand much about life but I do know when I am kind and being there for others I feel connected and right inside. Its been really Freaking Hot in Texas so I am looking forward to getting back to the Pacific. Will have to deal with the smoke and haze of the fires but no big deal. People have lost their homes and some firefighters their lives! What is a little smoke. If you read this please say a quick prayer for the safety of the men fighting the fires and the people and homes in harms way. I am on hold for a good model job when I get back so I have my fingers crossed. Its been really slow!! cant wait to get back in front of the camera. it really relaxes me for some reason. puts me in the moment. Peace and Love, Bruce

True beauty is within and the Dalai Lama just radiates that beauty. I love his website. Just google his name for the official site. I like to check in every day to see what he has been up to and read his speeches. His message of peace and kindness are an antidote to all the hatred and prejudice in the world. and what style. He wears monks robes but the maroon color is so beautiful. The other day he donned a football cap and just looked so cool, it put a smile on my face. I was fortunate to see him in NY in the 1980’s at St John the Divine Cathedral. I just smiled and cried. His message was the same then as now- KINDNESS!! I try to carry that out in my day to day life. Its not that hard to be kind. Smile. Give someone a compliment. Let somebody in traffic move in front of you. Tell your friends how much they mean to you. There was a model I knew who I worked with a lot and he would always offer everyone on set a back rub or spinal adjustment. He used to be a chiropracter back in Holland. What a kind, loving gesture. I always loved working with him. In these tough economic times dont forget to be kind to yourself. Peace and Love, Bruce

I am fortunate to live 5 minutes from the Lake Shrine Temple in Los Angeles. It was founded by the famed spiritual master Paramhansa Yoganada. I try to attend one or two of the weekly meditation and prayer sessions they have and always benefit greatly. Inner peace can be accessed and developed through the simple yet profound practice of meditation. There are many methods of meditation that will yield results. The practice is quite similar to physical exercise in that you have to do it and often to get the benefits. And like exercise it becomes quite addictive because of how it makes you feel inside. More peaceful and more self aware. Its great and I highly recommend you try. You will grow in peace and compassion. So what does this have to do with Fashion? Well real beauty is an inner quality that radiates outward when you are experiencing peace and love. Things are slow in the fashion business these days like many other industries. We are all interconnected and I am reminded how much work and cash flow is generated when a photo shooting takes place. Models, photographers,hair stylists, producers,caterers,drivers, clothing stylists,agents,make-up artists etc. are all working and making money. a product or clothing line is made to look desirable and of course this stimulates people to spend money. This is good. I often felt the job of a model was insignificant or shallow but models just help the economy roll along and that is good. Just a small contribution. There isn’t a Nobel prize for modeling but every little bit helps. so I will be happy when I get my next call to go strike a pose and help create some wonderful images and work with all the super cool and great people in the Fashion business!! Lets get this economy rolling!! And of course lets practice love and compassion with ourselves, our families,our friends and everyone!!! Lots of Love and Peace to All. Bruce Hulse

I have been getting so many e-mails from old friends and lovers. They have been all so sweet and interesting. You walk away from a friend or lover and dont see or hear from them in years and then there they are. They are the same but different. Life has moved on and it seems we have all gained some insight into how fragile life can be and the need to love and forgive and live in the NOW. Every day is a blessing and one only needs on a spiritual level to just be kind and compassionate. In this world of Dreams just let go and love!! At least for a second ,maybe a minute! I hope everyone reading this blog is blessed with peace, love , health and prosperity!!!!

Sorry I have been absent but life has been quite hectic with work and my 2 children. Have been feeling stressed and anxious so I know that means I have been neglecting my prayer and meditation. I try to take time before bed to sit and try to let the presence of the Greater Power enter and also pray for healing and prosperity for close friends and also the world. I believe in the power of prayer. Have also started to re-read Peace, Love and Healing by Bernie Siegel. Great book. I saw him in Miami many years ago and was so impressed by his message. He is a great man. We all need healing on many levels and we can all grow in Love. What does this have to do with modeling? So many models i have met can get trapped in their outer appearance and not realize we are much more than that. I did at times. Instead of recognizing the divine spark within and that we can connect with that in everyone. Which brings me to Barack Obama. To me I hear his message of hope and it is music to my ears. I really feel that he will help put the US on a new path. So get out and vote. Lots of Love , Peace and healing to eveyone who reads this and pass it on. Go Obama!!!
